Your Role in the Healing Process

Remember, your tattoo’s final outcome depends as much on your care for it as the artist’s skill. Proper aftercare is crucial.

Initial Care
  • Bandage Removal: Take off the bandage after 1 to 2 hours. Tattoos need air to heal.
  • Washing: Gently wash the tattoo using mild antibacterial soap and warm water. Use your fingertips or hand — no washcloths. Aim to remove all blood to prevent scabbing. Pat dry with a clean cloth or air dry.
Moisturizing
  • First Few Days: Apply a thin layer of ointment like Aquatat, a water-based lotion, or Vitamin E. A little goes a long way. If it looks too shiny or runs, dab off the excess.
  • Avoid Over-Moisturizing: Only reapply ointment if the tattoo feels dry or stiff. After 2-3 days, switch to a fragrance-free moisturizer, applying twice daily for the next two weeks.
Healing Process
  • Scabs and Peeling: Your tattoo will form a protective layer. It's crucial to find a balance in moisture to avoid thick scabs or over-moisturizing. A thin membrane, similar to a sunburn peel, is normal. Do not pick at it.
What to Avoid
  • Water Exposure: Steer clear of long soaks in water for 2 weeks. This includes baths, swimming, and saunas. Opt for short showers instead.
  • Scratching and Picking: It's normal for tattoos to itch, but don't scratch. Use rubbing alcohol or a gentle slap instead.
  • Sun Exposure: Keep your tattoo out of the sun until fully healed. Once healed, use high-quality sunblock to protect it. Sun can cause fading and damage even to healed tattoos.
Special Considerations for Hands and Feet
  • Extra Healing Time: Tattoos on hands and feet may take longer to heal due to rapid skin cell turnover. Avoid activities that may cause friction or wear on the tattoo during this time.
Remember
  • No guarantees on hand and foot tattoos: These areas are prone to rapid fading due to their high use and skin regeneration rate.
